This has been a topic of anx for me for a while. It is an internal debate that I struggle with. Let me first say I do not judge those mothers and fathers that allow their little girls to run around scantily clad, I am guilty of it also.
Some outfits are fine. Tops go mid way down, bottoms mid way up and there is only a mid drift showing. Other times I am shocked, little bra tops with bellies and booties hanging out everywhere.
My story started when my 7 year old daughter said, "mom all the girls wear them but me". I held out as long as I could and then a light bulb went off in my head use this as an incentive to get her to do something I want. I chose her splits.
It worked! I had to take away and give a couple times, but it worked.
One day after dance we went to the ice cream shop and the other mothers were looking at my daughter in horror, I know what they were thinking. "How can that mother let her daughter go out like that". I always have her cover herself, but this time the top was shear. I do not care what others think but getting judged is never a good feeling and makes you second guess your decisions.
Another thought I had was, most of the juniors and teens at the studio are always so professional looking. All in black (usually no bellies or booties hanging out) with perfect buns.
I said to myself "This is who I want my daughter to look up too and strive to be like."
Now, competitions I think are different. This is where your child shines and having a rocking costume to go with it is critical. My daughter loves to perform and when she's in the right costume it set the stage for her character to come out and a grand performance that hopefully wins a 1st place.
I don't think I will ever know the answer, but I would love to hear any thoughts.
